You've probably heard of the terms 'by Māori, for Māori, with Māori' before, but what does that mean and why is it essential to engage with Māori? Ānei ētahi whakaaro.

Let's begin with defining who 'Māori' are in this context. Are we referring to anyone with whakapapa Māori, Māori ancestry? Mana whenua, the people who trace their ancestry to the land or region? The whole iwi, tribal collective, or a select few? Or all the above?

Engaging with the right people is crticial to ensure the integrity of the kaupapa (project). Māori bring a unique perspective that enriches not only the process of the project, but the lasting impact for all involved. Here are some further reasons we believe it is essential to engage with Māori for any kaupapa:

Unique insights

Mana whenua have physical, emotional and spiritual ties to their whenua that can stretch back to over 30 generations. They have long been kaitiaki (stewards) of the land and have intimate knowledge, stories and perspectives of the area that bring an invaluable substance and richness to the project.

Longevity

Iwi, hapū and marae are stalwarts in their communities and have been around long before different projects and initiatives were set up, and they will remain long into the future. They are key members of the community with intimate knowings about the area, seasonal markers and activities that span across generations.

Equitable opportunities

Engaging with Māori promotes an equitable opportunity for key members of the community to input and enhance the design, development and/or delivery of a project.

There are many other reasons why it is essential to engage with Māori, these are just a few. If you'd like to learn more about engaging with Māori and engaging well, please contact us.
